The Agency's History
In July 1972, the Crater Planning District Commission was awarded a grant from the Virginia Division of State Planning and Community Affairs, now the Department of Intergovermental Affairs, to determine the number of persons 60 years of age or older living in District 19 and to determine what needs existed for various programs and services. As a result of the commission's planning study, a Senior Citizen Plan was developed and published in 1973. After adoption of the plan by member localities in 1974, the Virginia Office on Aging assisted the district in developing an area wide mechanism, which could plan, develop, coordinate, and implement programs and services to benefit the senior citizens population in the district. Such a mechanism was established and began operations in 1975. The area wide mechanism was most appropiately called the "Crater District Area Agency on Aging."
Supporting Our Community
The major objectives of the agency is to provide support services to senior citizens and their families and to serve as an advocate for people 60 years and older in the district. The agency's services and programs are primarily funded through the Older American's Act. Funding is also received from other sources, and the local jurisdictions served.
